The reversion of arable to heathland

The creation of 152ha of heathland on former arable land by the RSPB at its Minsmere Nature Reserve, Suffolk, has been reported in part before in Habitat Management News (BW 7:39). This work has now been written up by Ruth Mitchell and Stephen Hare in the form of a case study: Heathland Creation on Arable Land at Minsmere: A summary of the research and results 1990-1998 and the costs involved. This provides an overview of a number of separately published research papers and outlines future plans for the site. It can be obtained from the RSPB for £7.50 plus £2.50 postage and packing. Cheques and postal orders should be crossed and made payable to RSPB, and sent to RSPB Cashiers Dept, The Lodge, Sandy, Beds. SG19 2DL. Credit-card orders can be taken by Sara Smith on 01767 680551. To minimise administrative costs, invoices are not issued.
