Wet-grassland guidelines

A second handbook on the management of wet grassland has been published by the RSPB - European Wet Grassland: Guidelines for management and restoration. This new habitat management handbook follows in the footsteps of the well-received Wet Grassland Guide (BW 9: 358) published in 1997. The latter is an in-depth practical guide to managing wet grassland in the UK. The new handbook complements and builds on it by comparing management and restoration experiences across northern and central Europe.

The European handbook summarises the importance of wet grassland in Europe, and introduces management planning and management techniques, but is largely comprised of 16 case studies from throughout the region. It aims to share experience of practical management and restoration within the region and to present alternative management and restoration options. The book is a valuable supplement to the UK guide, demonstrating the role of natural processes at near-pristine sites such as the Pripyat Marshes of Belarus and addressing the wide range of management techniques used across the region.
