A problem facing many naturalists is the need to identify species from microscopical characteristics. It may be carapace structure on a water-flea, sporngium details in a species of moss, fruiting bodies on lichens, or fungus basidiospores; surface markings on butterfly eggs are sometimes of interest, as are the minutuae of florescences in the Gramineae.
