Ask an average audience to name the bird that they associate most closely with the Highlands of Scotland and I guess most would place the Golden Eagle Aquila chrysaetos near the top of the list. Yet few in that audience will have seen the bird in the wild, their experience more likely being drawn from spectacular pictures in books or from dramatic images on the television screen.
