I remember sitting with my back to a wall, eyes peeled while watching the roost entrance. Nothing was happening, the light fading. Then one by one, dark shadows zigzagged out of the window, and flew down the wall, along the ground, up and over a half-open stable door and into the living room of the adjacent cottage.
