"A couple of months ago, my daily exercise was splitting logs for firewood. I had a huge pile of logs after a gale blew down a popular and part of an Ash. As an excuse for a breather, I examined the logs for signs of life. There was the long-abandoned nest hole of a Green Woodpecker in the poplar and some hard black domes of King Alfred's Cakes Daldinia concentrica, one of the few fungi whose names I know, on the Ash."
