Everybody knows what Sphagnum is. Even to non-botanists, 'bog moss' is a familiar and often extensive feature of tracts of wet countryside. 'Spagnum' (sic) is still used extensively by gardeners, both in its guise as peat and as a filler for hanging baskets.
