The Scottish Wildcat, Felis silvestris, is a cat with an identity crisis. On 24th May 1990 at Stonehaven Sheriff Court, a prosecution for the illegal killing of three Wildcats failed after the expert witness claimed that he could not identify the deceased animals as Wildcats beyond reasonable doubt (Balharry & Daniels 1998).
