The first sighting of the giant but harmless Basking Shark, Cetorhinus maximus, leaves people with an experience they seldom forget. Yet the natural history of this spectacular creature, the second largest fish in the world, is still largely a mystery. Furthermore, its exploitation represents an illuminating case study of how not to conserve a fish species in its own right or, indeed, manage a fishery.
