A recent review of the breeding biology of the Great Crested Newt Triturus cristatus and the application of that knowledge to a site with a large population reveals how 'topping-up' water at a crucial time of year could be predicted to make or break an isolated population of newts (William Atkins, British Herpetological Society Bulletin No. 63:17-26 1998).
