Zander – the hidden invader

The Zander or Pikeperch Stizostedion lucioperca is a predatory fish alien to Britain. Zander are now established in the Fens, some isolated lakes and, more significantly, many parts of the Midlands canal and river system. In mainland Europe, Zander are a favourite sport fish for anglers and are prized as a food fish – you may have eaten them as 'Sander' or 'Pike-Perch' in continental restaurants. In Britain, however, few anglers value Zander for sport and the fish is widely regarded as a pest.
