The Duke of Burgundy – conserving the intractable

The duke or Burgundy butterfly Hamearis lucina was origionally called ‘Mr Vernon’s Small Fritillary’. The reasoning behind its elevation to the aristocracy is as obscure as the connection with the Roman goddess of childbirth after whom it takes its specific name. Also curious is the fact that until very recently the Duke of Burgundy had always been referred to as ‘fritillary’.
