Identification – Red-eyed damselflies

The red-eyed damselflies Erythromma are represented in Europe by two species: the Red-eyed Damselfly Erythromma najas (Hansemann 1823) and the Small Red-eye Damselfly E. viridulum (Charpentier 1840). Their names are derived from the distinctive red eyes of the adult males, which are visible in both species from some distance.
