Comment – Naturdenkmal: a site-protection concept worth revisiting?

Ted Green's question 'Should ancient trees be designated as Sites of Special Scientific Interest' (Green 2001) reveals a gap in UK nature-conservation policy: there is no clear mechanism for protecting natural features with aesthetic or cultural value below the scale of landscape unless they have scientific value or are endangered.
