Dungeness is the most extensive area of vegetated shingle in Britain, and is unusual in that ancient stable ridges of single extend further inland than anywhere else on the UK coastline. These support rich communities of lichen-dominated vegetation holding many rare plants and animals. The oldest communities occur on Lydd Ranges, where there are competing demands for military training.
