On 3rd March 2005, the Department for Envrionment, Food and Rural Affrairs (Defra) launched a new agri-environment scheme for England, Environmental Stewardship. Secretary of State Margaret Beckett, when launching it, described it as an important part of the biggest changes to farming for a generation.
