The BTO’s Nest Record Scheme – the value of counting your eggs before they hatch

As I write, I have one eye focused on a potter trap in the back garden, waiting for a Blackbird Turdus merula to throw caution to the wind in pursuit of a slice of apple. If she succumbs to temptation, a numbered ring will be placed on her leg that will, if recovered, provide information about her movements and subsequent survival.
