Thirty years of biological surveying in the National Trust

The Late Derek Ratcliffe's A Nature Conservation Review (NCR) (Ratcliffe 1977) marked a seminal moment for nature conservation and the National Trust. On the day it was published, the Trust's responsibility went from that of a concerned landowner to that of a leading nature-conservation body, but without a strategy or the infrastructure in place to assess or manage this newly discovered distinction.
