What has the SSSI improvement programme achieved for nature conservation in England?

The objective for the condition of England's Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs) is likely to be reached by December 2010, when at least 95% of the total SSSI area in England should be in 'favourable' or 'recovering' condition. This article seeks to explain what this achievement means for SSSIs and why we feel that such effort has been so worthwhile.
