This article started life as a paper which I gave to the British Bryological Society at its meeting in the autumn of 2010. Although on a subject close to my heart, it was meant to be fairly lightweight, to sit between papers on molecular taxonomy. However, it seemed to strike a chord with a number of people and others found it quite thought-provoking, so it was decided to amend it for publication here.
