What have we learnt from 50 years of biological recording?

The publication of the Atlas of the British Flora 50 years ago (Perring & Walters 1962) marked the start of the modern era of biological recording. The Biological Records Centre will be celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2014. Since the 1960s, the aims and methods of recording have become more sophisticated as our environmental awareness has increased, and as recorders have taken advantage of the technological changes of the last two decades.
