Letter from the far West Coast

"The long, calm spells of this eccentic summer quite ironed out the surf of our Atlantic beach and eased back a whole new selvedge of soft and fluffy sand. Inland, the absence of wind left the west's limestone trout lakes becalmed and unstirred. Tidelines shrank and water temperatures rose – in many places, and for long periods, above 25°C."
