The founding editor of British Wildlife reflects upon one man’s influence, not just on this magazine, but on nature conservation in the 20th century.
The year 1989 was something of a milestone. In conservation circles it is still seen as one of those watershed years. Good things happened, such as the moves to adopt the Habitats and Species Directive in the UK, the start of the Red Kite Milvus milvus reintroduction scheme, the first British Birdwatching Fair at Rutland, the founding of Plantlife and, of course, the launch of British Wildlife.
