Creating structural diversity and deadwood habitat by ring-barking. With 20% of British fauna dependent upon it, the value and role played by dead and decaying wood in woodland biodiversity is well known. The historic removal of it from modern plantation woodland makes this a scarce resource, leading to a desire for managers actively to create deadwood. Although ring-barking is a widely used technique to increase structural diversity and deadwood, its effectiveness has not been so well documented.
