Through a naturalist’s eyes

In 1992, the MoD was selling Brampton Wood, near Huntington, a 132ha SSSI that was recorded in Domesday Book. It was advertised as having 'outstanding leisure and commercial potential'. The then Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire Wildlife Trust was desperate to save the wood from paintball games and motorcycle scrambles and urgently needed to raise the £250,000 purchase price. I therefore wrote an article in The Daily Telegraph to solicit support. It attracted one substantial donation from a man who had been stationed at RAF Brampton during the War and had done his courting in the wood!"
