Leicester has nurtured some notable naturalists. Alfred Russel Wallace who, along with Darwin, developed the theory of evolution by natural selection worked there. The naturalist, writer and broadcaster Sir David Attenborough grew up there. A third, less famous, but undoubtedly great Leicester naturalist was Henry Walter Bates, who discovered mimicry in the natural world.
