Comment: The insect decline – time to limit pesticide use?

The decline of insect populations took centre stage in the media as a result of the publication of a review of insect decline studies. John Hopkins summarises some of the findings of this particular review and pinpoints the use of pesticides as a major contributing factor towards this decline, including a discussion on alternative methods to reduce pesticide use.

In February 2019, the apparent collapse of insect populations reached the mainstream media. The news was spawned by the publication of a review of insect declines (Sánchez-Bayo & Wyckhuys 2019), which attracted the attention of many outlets in Britain, as well as CNN and the Washington Post in the USA, the Australian Broadcasting Company and Radio New Zealand, among others.
