“A few years back, I totted up around 120 species of plant and animal which are known to have gone extinct in Ireland since the arrival of humans. Ireland lacks a particularly extensive archaeological record or a long history of nature-recording, and this total is therefore likely to be a considerable underestimate of the real scale of loss.”
