The Environmental Improvement Plan – is it fit for purpose?

The Environmental Improvement Plan 2023 (EIP) is the first update to the 25 Year Plan to Improve the Environment, which was published five years ago. Here, Graham Tucker outlines the revised nature targets and discusses whether the EIP actions relating to England are enough to meet them.

In 2018 the government published its 25 Year Plan to Improve the Environment (25YEP) (HMG 2018), which deals primarily with England. As discussed in a previous article in British Wildlife (Tucker & Baldock 2018), the plan seemed to adopt a more positive agenda for the environment, to help to achieve the Conservatives’ manifesto promise to leave the environment in a better state, as well as to make good on claims that the UK environment would benefit from Brexit.
