A short history of snail-eating in Britain

Reflecting on his childhood memories of collecting snails to be prepared for eating, Jeff Ollerton explores the history of snail-eating in Britain.

It is the early 1970s and I am in my childhood home in Southwick, Sunderland, close to the River Wear. I cannot have been more than five or six years old when my dad and an uncle suggested going for a walk ‘to find some snails’.
