Habitat management news

The New Forest contains internationally important epiphytic lichen communities. The reduction in the use of Holly, Ilex aquifolium, as a winter fodder combined with a reduction in browsing intensity has resulted in a thick understorey of Holly within many pasture woodlands. The thick shade produced by the Holly prevents the growth of all but a few common lichen species.
