The value to wildlife of ageing and ancient trees and pollards has long been recognised by entomologists and mycologists. Pollards are working trees; defined as those maintained by man often long into senility to provide a renewable resource, usually from boughs and branches out of reach of browsing animals regularly cut for their wood or as fodder for livestock.
