The Ecology of Pastoralism in The New Forest

Grazed commons and village greens were once commonplace in the English landscape. In medieval and early modern times, most villages had their greens on which geese, horses and cattle were turned out, and many of them also had rights to depasture stock in more extensive common pastures of grasslands, woods and heaths.
