Throughout Europe, strong connections between human populations and native elm trees can be found. Elm is a durable and useful wood which has been widely used for construction purposes, tools and furniture-making. Its rot-resistant properties commended it to certain specific uses, such as pipes for carrying water and piling for river banks. The foliage was also valued food for livestock. As well as many practical uses, elms have a long history of cultural significance.
