Birds in English place-names: signposts to the old ecologies of place

Across the road from where I live, by the Blackwater River in Essex, there is a new housing estate, one of three in my village. As I write, these houses are just completed, up for sale, and they bear the names of birds.

Given the rise of seemingly randomly assigned nature names for houses and streets, Michael Warren traces a long history of ornithological place names and the natural history that can be revealed through them.
