Ten years of Hibernating Heralds in Scotland

On 5th November 2016, a serendipitous encounter with a Tissue moth Triphosa dubitata in a ruined castle in East Lothian led to what has become the Hibernating Herald survey. The outing to the ruin had been made with a different moth in mind: the Herald Scoliopteryx libatrix.

Katty Baird and Mark Cubitt describes some of the Hibernating Heralds survey’s findings and illustrate the rewards of getting to know a local species or habitat well.
