The Great Fen – a waterland for the future

An early edition of the Ordnance Survey map series shows an area between Peterborough and Huntingdon as 'the Great Fen'. Until the mid 19th centurry, this was a vast wilderness of fen and bog, but by the 1850s drainage began which was to allow the fen to be converted to arable farmland.
