"The first thing I learnt about earthworm biology was that you can kill one only by cutting it into 100 pieces. This is an interesting piece of pre-school lore, but I do not recall why earthworms needed to be killed (and wouldn't squashing them be easier?). I suppose that the idea would appeal to people who find wormcasts ugly."
