It could be assumed that land which has been affected by mining holds negligible interest for wildlife and, indeed, that mining activities are inherently damaging to flora and fauna. Whilst this is easily understandable for operations such as opencast coal-mining, where landscapes are completely transformed, in other circumstances the effects, especially in the long term, are less obvious.
