Although the female Glow-worm is wingless and looks rather like a woodlouse, it is, in fact, closely allied to the soldier beetles. All stages of the Glow-worm emit light but it is the adult female that has the brightest light. This is produced by a layer of luciferin on the underside of her lower abdomen. The light is used to attract the winged males.
