"My morning walk often takes me along the river bank and, through the winter, there has been a point where it passed a family of Mute Swans, the dirty grey plumage of the two cygnets contrasting with the spotless white of their parents. They were always in the same place until one day, in late February, I cast around but there was no sign of the family."
