The British Isles have a wonderful range of wildlife sites, and for some features – such as seabird colonies and bluebell woods – we have many of the best examples in Europe. However, thanks largely to becoming an island too soon after the last ice age, before a complement of species could recolonise northwards, we have a poorer range of species than equivalent areas of continental Europe.
