The value of dead and rotting wood within woodland ecosystems is now generally appriciated as providing habitat for a rich diversity of wildlife ranging from fungi and mosses to many insects, birds and mammals. Woodland and forestry management to conserve dead-wood habitat is a common feature of woodland management plans and is specifically identified by the Forestry Authority as a feature to be conserved within woods managed through the Woodland Grant Scheme.
