Identifying ancient woodland using vascular plant indicators

Francis Rose has recently reminded us (Rose 1999) that ancient-woodland vascular plants (AWVPs) can be used both as a means of evaluating individual woods for nature conservation and as a method of indentifying ancient woods. However, he took the view that AWVPs 'should be regarded only as a tool, not as  an infallible guide …. and in combination with other information'. This cautionary note was wise and necessary.
