"The Kingfisher seems to have been the object of more unusual beliefs than most birds. In the 12th century it was thought that dead Kingfishers did not decay but, if hung up by the bill, moulted into fresh plumage each year. These corpses kept away moths and witches; if suspended on a string their bills pointed north or, alternatively, in the direction of the wind."
