The first field guides: the Wayside and Woodland books

To judge by its current standing in Blackwells bookshop in Oxford, natural history is roughly on par with, say, Mesopotamian studies or visitors' guides to Oxford. From its spacious perch near the front door a few years ago, natural history was banished first to the gallery, and then to a dark corner in the basement where only the most ardent bibliophile would venture.
