"Since the dawn of history, field botanists have always referred to introduced species as aliens. Hence the title of Sir Edward Salisbury's classic book, Weeds and Aliens. Today, he would probably be made to call it 'Arable Flowers and Non-natives', especially if this curiously named new government department DEFRA had anything to do with it."
