Aspen Populus tremula is one of the most widely distributed tree species in the British Isles, but Aspen-dominated woodlands occur only in parts of the Scottish Highlands where the species was a very early post-glacial colonist (before Scots Pine Pinus sylvestris). Aspen and Aspen woodland are important for the conservation of rare species, including flies, moths, beetles, fungi, luchen and mosses.
