The status, ecology and conservation of the Smelt in the British Isles

The Smelt Osmerus eperlanus, also known as Sparling (sometimes Spirling or Sperling) or Cucumber Smelt, was once a common species around much off the British Isles and occurred in the estuaries of most large rivers from the Clyde and Tay southwards.
