"Heavy rain during the night brought out the snails from the nooks and crannies where they had been hiding. To those who think that garden snails are too numerous, I would say that the solution is simple. Frank Buckland, the noted Victorian naturalist, wrote in 1880 that snails were becoming so scare in London that those supplying the market for snail flesh had sometimes to go as far afield as Southend."
